This website is designed to disseminate the knowledge and information related to petroleum biotechnology and microbial enhanced oil recovery in Oman (MEOR) Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), Oman. The research projects were initiated in 2006 with four senior researchers. The petroleum biotechnology projects were mainly supported by His Majesty Research Fund, SQU, and other oil industries in Oman, mostly Petroleum Development of Oman (PDO) and led to various research outcomes published in different international journals and participation in various national and international conferences. Different research techniques, research facilities and equipment, international collaborations were established. Five different types of biosurfactants and two biopolymers were identified from Omani microbial isolates. The bioporoducts were fully characterized in-house and tested for its ability to recover light and heavy oils. Some of the biosurfactants have potential of transporting heavy oil in pipes. The research team has successfully demonstrated EOR from highly fractured cores using Microbial Permeability Profile Modification (MPPM). The team has used microbial isolates for biotransformation of heavy crude oil to light fractions with potential of oil spills bioremediation and remediation of oily sands. The team has established technology for detection and identification of sulfur reducing bacteria (SRB). In addition to the above technologies, the team can assist servicing the oil companies in the following areas:
